No Hail Caesarean

“Women who do want VBAC are told they’re being irresponsible and
gambling with the lives of their babies,” said Berna Diehl,
spokeswoman for the International Caesarean Awareness Network (ICAN),
a nonprofit that works to cut back unnecessary C-sections. “So they’re
shamed into a repeat Caesarean, which is too bad when you consider the
overall safety [for a VBAC] is there. They’re not always getting the
full picture when they walk into a doctor’s office to make a good,
evidence-based decision.”
Cesarean for a quick buck?

In many parts of urban India, women having cesarean section deliveries seems to be the norm and those having normal deliveries almost seem to be an exception. But are the women aware of the risks?

Illinois lawmakers may license midwives

…The Illinois Senate voted 51-7 last month to legally recognize and
license certified professional midwives. It also approved, 35-21, the creation of 10 “birthing centers” that
would be something of a compromise between hospitals and homes. Under
a pilot program, the centers would be staffed by nurse-midwives and
would not have the full medical resources of a hospital. Both measures now go to the Illinois House… read more »

Australia’s New South Wales Issues Directive against Maternal-Request Cesareans

The
New South Wales Health Maternal and Perinatal Committee issued a
directive against maternal-request cesareans in public hospitals,
stating “maternal request on its own is not an indication for elective
cesarean section.”
Utah
Releases Report of Outcomes of Licensed Direct-Entry Midwives

In
2005, direct-entry midwives gained licensure in the state of Utah.
Included in the act was a provision requiring the Licensed
Direct-Entry Midwife Board to present an annual report to the
legislature. This first report, released at the end of
November, covers the eight-month period between January, 2006-August,
2006. Some highlights include:
- an
  overall 10.6% transfer rate, with 9 out of 10 transfers having positive
  outcomes.
- a c-section rate of 2.1%. By
  comparison, the national average is 30.2%.

Barnev Computerized Labor Monitor approved for marketing in the U.S.

Barnev Inc. announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the company’s new
computerized labor monitoring system, the CLM, for use in the active stage of labor. The device continuously measures cervical dilation and fetal head station. These measurements are displayed real time both numerically and
