A woman undergoing a cesarean section died Friday in a Boston area hospital. Read the story here.
ICAN President Pam Udy states, "Our hearts go out to the family suffering this incredible loss. We are all women who have undergone cesareans, and as the reporter accurately points out, we are at a significantly higher risk of losing our lives during that surgery than during a vaginal birth. ICAN seeks to protect mother/infant health by preventing as many cesareans as is safely possible."
As noted in the article, "The risk of death from a caesarean section is estimated at fewer than 1 in 2,500…That is significantly more than the roughly 1 in 10,000 risk of death during a vaginal birth."
