eNews Editor

Purpose:

You: Birth News Junkie. Seeker after truth, or at least the next interesting trend in the media about the fight to allow normal birth. You’ve got more than 10 birth feeds in your RSS reader, you have Google Alerts set up for daily, weekly, and monthly reports, you cruise PubMed for fun. Filling in the blanks of a premade HTML template doesn’t scare you, and you think PHPMail is quaint. You’re good with begging for subscriptions pretty much everyplace, and your vision is reaching every birthing woman in the world, through subscriptions and translations of the awesome work you do. And you view a twice-monthly deadline as a great excuse to share your very own links and research with ~1500 of your best online friends.

Key Responsibilities:

Acquiring content

  • Subscribe to google alerts for cesarean, homebirth, midwifery, and whatever other keywords seem likely. The info on weekly vs. daily or monthly is different.
  • Scan the birth lists for research, news links, and particularly striking posts. Archive these.
  • Set up a feed reader with RSS feeds to birth blogs, and star any posts that seem worth highlighting
  • Send out content deadline reminders to Board and ICAN-L lists

Assembling the mailer

  • Create mailer from HTML template. Must be comfortable either coding HTML from scratch in text editor, or using IDE like Dreamweaver or NetBeans.
  • Assemble issues that are coherent based on theme, or timely relevance.

Mailing

  • Must be comfortable with PHPMail

Development

  • Promote subscriptions
Supervision:
Works under Publications
Length of Appointment:
2 years, flexible
Time Commitment:
An hour a day in content creation plus about 5 hours to create, archive, and mail, or two big blocks, if you prefer to acquire content and assemble all at once.
