Publications Director

Purpose: 

We’re looking for someone with familiarity and connection with the publications industry. Whether it’s web/online pubs, paper pubs, or newsletters, We Need You. The cool thing is that there is no official job description, which means that to some degree, you get to focus on what really fires you up. Right now, here are some of the things going on in the Wild World of ICAN Pubs:

  • Several print books in progress, ranging from "being written" to "needs to be revised" to "reprint"
  • Helping update/recruit writers/edit the whitepapers (working closely with Education)
  • Managing eNews (email only publication, twice-monthly send, basic HTML required)
  • Managing Clarion (periodical publication, with standalone editor in place)
  • Managing Website (http://ican-online.org/, with webmaster in place)
  • Working with the Multimedia Crew to keep us relevant and in the space
Key Responsibilities: 

You’ll be working with a Board of Directors, but not a lot of direct oversight. And you’ll have the opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way to improving heath and birth options for women.

Important skills and areas of expertise or general knowledge include:

  • Full competence with HTML
  • CSS desirable, but not mandatory
  • Understanding of blogs and their implications both legal and social
  • Familiarity with social networking tools (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace)
  • Understanding of RSS
  • Must be familiar with SEO
  • Familiarity with copyright
  • Familiarity with google alerts and other forms of news alerts and tracking
  • Knowledge of A-list birth bloggers and websites
  • Knowledge of and/or membership in, various email groups. Big ICAN list a must.
  • Working knowledge and relationships with web and pubs people working for other birth and advocacy groups
  • Understanding and familiarity with all aspects of the print publication world
  • Bulletproof editorial skills
  • Ability to assess writing skills, and identify writer recruitment possibilities
  • Ability to read medical research, and assess potential validity as reference material
  • Willingness to step in and assist team members in their functions
Length of Appointment: 
2 years
Time Commitment: 
10-30, depending on activity in all fields at any given time
